Members of the 11th Battalion, along with members from other Australian Living History Units attended the Western Front commemorations in July 2016 at both Fromelle and Pozieres, touring the battlefields and cemeteries. We had the honour to be present when a Digger, recently identified from WW1 and discovered during road widening near Polygon Wood in Belgium, was reinterred in Buttes New British Cemetery. The above picture is taken from our march to Buttes New British Cemetery through Polygon Wood.
Our guide, the amazingly knowledgeable Chris Barker, was from the 10th Essex in the UK, and his expertise was immeasurable and it was he, mad as he is, who convinced some of the stalwarts among us to spend the night in one of the restored trenches from which soldiers emerged in the 1914 Christmas Truce.
