Leane's Trench has opened for 2022

Welcome to the 11th Battalion AIF and the Gallipoli Trench Project.

Based in Geraldton, Western Australia, 400kms north of Perth, 11th Battalion Living History Unit is a living history and commemorative group dedicated to researching and representing Western Australia's first and finest Battalion.

The group also embarked on a major project, recreating a living Gallipoli Trench complete with sound systems, actors and all the paraphernalia of war to make the experience for visitors as real as possible. Officially opened on 19 November 2016, the first cruise ship tour actually started on 15th November and was the first of many projected.  From January 21st 2017 the trench will be open every third Saturday of the month. The trench is an authentic replica of a captured Turkish trench as taken by the 11th on the night of 31st July 1915 and named for the commander who led the attack, Capt R. L. Leane.

See the page dedicated to this project.

2021 End of Year Wrap

After the damage caused by cyclone Seroja in April and the inclement weather that followed, the trench was closed for a long period due to it being unsafe for public viewing.

Along with our own members and a team from Disaster Relief Australia, the trench was repaired in time for the commemoration of the taking of Leane's Trench on 31 July.

In August a number of members supported the event at the Walkaway Soldiers Museum and in September the unit held displays at the Chapman Valley and Northampton Shows.

In the remaining open days for the year, we had well over 100 visitors from the Jurien RSL with a number of the Jurien Emergency Services Cadets, members of the Australian Army Apprentice Association, members of the Geraldton Probus Club and the general public.

The positive feedback from our visitors has been excellent and we appreciate the words of encouragement.

We would also like to thank our sponsors for their ongoing support and encourage community members to support these local businesses.

From all of us at the 11th Battalion A.I.F. Living History Unit, we wish you all a happy and safe Christmas and New Year.
